The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)
In 2014, Warner Bros. released an
animated movie based off the toy line known as Lego's. It became a
huge hit, and spawned two spin-offs. Now, five years later, we
finally get a sequel in the form of “The Lego Movie 2: The Second
Part”. And while it may not as be as groundbreaking as its
predecessor, it does contain a wide assortment of humor that fans
will definitely enjoy. While “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part”
may live up to the first film, it does have a unique message about
playing together and working together as a team.
The story is set five years after the
events of the first film. Emmet (Chris Pratt) is enjoying life
despite the apocalypse happening. His girlfriend Lucy (Elizabeth
Banks) tries to inform him that everything isn't awesome, and try to
be more serious about life. That is until a mysterious being known as
General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz) comes and takes Emmet's friends
away. Now, Emmet must venture out into deep space and save his
friends with the help of a rugged individual named Rex (also Pratt),
who helps him learn what it means to toughen up.
“The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part”
does have a lot of interesting things going on, but maybe it does
them a little too well.
First off, the cast does a great job
with their respective roles here, and Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks
really deliver stand out performances. Plus, all of the cameos from
various other celebrities are a special treat as they deliver nice
little easter eggs to the fans. Yet, aside from really quick cameos,
most are just that: cameos that would please the fans.
The animation is still really
impressive. Sure, everything is still done via computers, but the
process makes it look like it was done via stop motion. The worlds
that are created look amazing, and the action is fast paced making
one have to stop and appreciate the effort every animator put forth
into this production. There is even new Lego sets that look pretty
amazing as well. This is a very visual pleasing movie.
The movie also has a nice sense of
humor just like the first film. With pop culture references, and even
jabs at its own world, the film is a comedy through and through.
However, this could also lead to to the
film's major downfall: the story.
The story itself isn't bad, as it does
offer up a really nice lesson about playing with our siblings, but
the problem is, the audience can see this coming from a mile away.
Because of this, the story feels kind of predictable, making the
jokes not work in the process. Also, most of the humor is aimed at
older audiences, so younger viewers, to which this movie is aimed at,
may not get a lot the references. Plus, there is a huge twist at the
end involving the character of Rex that, again, the audience can see
coming. If the story had been improved, then it would have been
great.
In conclusion, with “The Lego Movie
2: The Second Part”, we get a pretty formulaic story, but still
some neat visuals to keep everyone entertained. I guess, everything
is awesome, just not the way you can see it.
