How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
It's tough to end a series. Especially
one as beloved and praised the How to Train Your Dragon franchise
from DreamWorks. The first film back in 2010 stunned audiences, and
the second one in 2014, took a more darker route. And now, with “How
to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” being the third and final
installment, it appears that the people behind this movie have really
stepped up their game. Their are only a few minor setbacks to this
film, but that doesn't obstruct the final film in this amazing
franchise any more than it does. “How to Train Your Dragon: The
Hidden World” is a nice conclusion to a good franchise, even though
it is a shame to see it end like this.
The story takes place one year after
the events of the second movie. Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon
Toothless have managed to create a utopia where vikings and dragons
coexist. However, this leads to a dragon hunter named Grimmel (F.
Murray Abraham) involved, and now Hiccup must take up the
responsibility of either letting the dragons go, or creating peace.
“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden
World” is a nice conclusion to the entire film series. And here's
why.
First and foremost, the animation
presented here is absolutely incredible. DreamWorks Animation really
pulled through here, and the film looks gorgeous. From the mature
character designs, the outstanding backgrounds, the animation
presented hereis of high quality.
The acting is also top notch. Baruchel
is giving one of the best performances of his career. Abraham is also
quite good as a nasty villain. Every performance presented here is
great in their own right.
John Powell's music is yet another
amazing achievement as it brings forth a great score for the ears.
Yet what keeps audiences coming back to
this franchise is the story.
With each installment, the story drives
home the message of friendship between human and beast. In the first
film, it's trust; the second, it's control; here, it's
responsibility. Hiccup matures in learning about the world around
him, and we as the audience mature as well. Plus, the ending is
really satisfying when watching it on the big screen.
With that being said, the movie does
have a few minor setbacks. The romantic side of the story, while
necessary, does feel more predictable and almost forced in a way.
Plus, some the dialogue concerning this romance feels rather cheesy
in its execution. Also, the movie could have gotten a few more action
set pieces; but honestly, that would detract the story in a huge
detail.
In conclusion, quite literally, “How
to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” is a thrilling finale to a
great series. Make it key to see these dragons one last time.
