Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Racing could be considered an art form
in the same vein as movies. And Hollywood has taken notice. Over the
past century, Hollywood has managed to churn out quite a lot of films
with the subject of racing being involved. And one of the newer films
to feature racing in a rather addicting entertainment form, is “Ford
v Ferrari”, the historical feature about how the Ford Motor Company
built a car fast enough to beat Ferrari at the famous Le Mans
raceway. Directed by James Mangold, and starring Matt Damon and
Christian Bale, the film explores the lives of two professional car
enthusiasts, who want to earn that fame and glory alongside Ford.
While there are some factual errors as this is a film, they are only
minor, ad the rest of the film is a great and amazing thrill ride;
especially for the ears. “Ford v Ferrari” is a movie that only
people who enjoy cars and racing will enjoy.
The story focuses on two very different
individuals: Carroll Shelby (Damon), and Ken Miles (Bale). Shelby is
a former racer that now sells racecars to the general public. Shelby
is a mechanic going through some financial difficulties. Shelby gets
approached by the Ford Motor Company to build him a car to beat
Ferrari at Le Mans, With the help of Miles, Carroll and Ken decide to
make racing history by proving that the Americans are better racers
than the Italians.
“Ford v Ferrari” is a great and
spectacular film.
The story is engaging, and keeps the
viewer interested throughout is nearly two and a half hour run time.
Everything that happens on the screen is fascinating, This is all
thanks to the editing by three individuals: Andrew Buckland, Michael
McCusker, and Dirk Westervelt. These three guys managed to create a
truly exciting film for people to view.
The cinematography by Phedon
Papamichael looks absolutely amazing. The movie looks like it was
from the 1960s, and it feels like the 1960s. Phedon did a really
great job making this movie look good.
What really sells this film is the
sound. Everything, from the sound mixing and sound editing, is really
perfected here. All of the mechanics and noises are heard. And the
racing. Every little detail that goes into the racing is implemented
here. It feels like one is actually in the car while the driving is
taking place.
The cast is great as well. Both Damon
and Bale deliver great performances. But it is Bale who truly shines.
He may not get top billing, but this is definitely one of his best
performances ever.
Finally, the direction by Mangold is
absolutely stunning. He manages to create a great deal of tension
between the characters presented here. And all of the scenes are
blocked perfectly. Plus, Mangold directs the actors with sense of
realism, and there is a sense of friendship being delivered within
their performances. Mangold is truly rising up to become one of the
best directors of all time.
The only criticism that the film brings
up is with its history. Yes, this is a work of fiction, but a lot of
the stuff presented here is fictionalized. But this the only major
criticism that I found while watching the film.
In conclusion, “Ford v Ferrari” is
a racing fan's dream come true, and will definitely bring out a lot
enjoyment from anyone who enjoys a little fast speed with their
entertainment. Step on the gas, and see this movie for yourself.
